Young male applicants between the ages of 18 and 30 who meet our requirements will receive a one year scholarship to study at the ABS in South Africa. This will cover the cost of tuition, accommodation (at our Seminary dormitory), vegetarian food three times daily, medical treatment for common illnesses, and monks robes. If at the end of the first year a novice meets our requirements he will be awarded another years scholarship, the same will apply for the end of the second year. Each novice must submit his educational certificates, CV/Resume, a proof of clean criminal record and clean bill of health. The first year is a basic orientation to Buddhism and Chinese language, the second year covers Chinese Language and Culture in greater detail and Buddhist theory and practice. The third year is deeper level Buddhist philosophy and cultivation. After completing the three-year program novices may decide to continue with their studies and continue as a Buddhist monk or return to laity life, without any obligation to African Buddhist Seminary. Those who wish to ordain at Buddhist monks and to further their studies in the Dharma have the opportunity to study at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan. Alternatively novices may choose to remain at Nan Hua Temple for a further year of post graduate studies entitled Experiential learning.
